TUNE-UP TOOL CCleaner 4.08

What you need: Windows XP, Vista, 7 or 8

CCleaner has long been one of our favourite free programs and improvements to the new version have just made it even better. If you haven’t encountered CCleaner before, it’s basically a tool designed to scan for and remove unwanted files, web cookies, browser history and invalid Registry entries from your computer. It’s veiy handy for reclaiming disk space, maintaining privacy and generally keeping your PC in good order. Version 4.08 includes the ability to clean junk and temporary files from even more programs, including Adobe Photoshop Elements and Nero, and adds improved support for all the latest web browsers. Other useful enhancements include a secure file-deletion tool.

Getting rid of unvranted files is easy, though for an added layer of safety, you should activate the secure deletion setting. To do this, click Options on the left, tick ‘Secure file deletion’ and choose an option from the Overwrite dropdown menu below. Note that this will slow the process down slightly.

Click the Registry tab on the left to clean the Windows system file, though we recommend using caution here. Creating a System Restore point in Windows is a good way of backing up the Registry before making any changes to it.

It’s also worth exploring CCleaner’s Tools tab. Here you’ll find some useful extras. For example, click Uninstall for an alternative to Windows5 tool for uninstalling applications, and click Startup to enable or disable start-up programs. Make sure you deselect any unwanted toolbars during setup.

1. fine program’s main components are divided into tabs on the left-hand side of the window. In the Cleaner tab you’ll find the tools for deleting unwanted files.

2. Use the tick boxes in the Windows pane to select or deselect the areas you want CCleaner to scan. Click the Applications tab to select other programs you want CCleaner to include.

3. Click Analyze to perform a scan. CCleaner will display any unwanted items it finds in the main section of the window (see above) and tell you how much space you’ll get back if you remove them.

4. If you’re happy to delete the files listed, then click Run Cleaner. Otherwise, return to the Windows and Applications tabs and deselect the components you’d like to keep.

TeraCopy is designed as a slicker alternative to the slow, somewhat limited file-management components within Windows. It uses data-transfer methods that result in faster file transfers between drives, adding the ability to pause and resume transfers. If it encounters a problem file when copying, TeraCopy will automatically try again, then skip the file if necessary without cancelling the entire transfer. The new version adds improvements, such as automatic file-splitting when copying large files to drives formatted with the FAT 32 file system, which has a size limit of 4GB.

WHAT SHOULD I DOWNLOAD? We tell you what software to use

How can I replace Microsoft Publisher in Ubuntu?

A friend’s operating system crashed and her son installed Ubuntu. She used to run Microsoft Publisher and is looking for a replacement program. She mainly needs it to make cards, notelets and calendars rather than newsletters. Can you please suggest software that would be compatible?

Tell your friend to install LibreOfflce 4.3. This free office suite includes a component called Draw, which lets you design precisely the types of documents you describe and works in a way that will be familiar to Publisher users. The latest version of LibreOfflce, available for Windows and Ubuntu, comes with an import filter for Microsoft’s .pub document format, meaning she’ll be able to edit older flies that she created in Publisher. Be warned, however, that when we tried this ourselves, we found that in some cases formatting and, in particular, text elements came out looking slightly different or were missing altogether.
